Building with Petalinux

The ADI Linux kernel can also be compiled using Petalinux to be used on Xilinx SoC FPGA based platforms (using ADI Yocto repository).

To properly setup a build environment for Petalinux is out of scope of this guide. Refer to ADI Xilinx layer for some usefull links.

The starting point is to clone the ADI yocto repository.

This layer was tested against Petalinux-v2018.3

Building steps

To build a full image, follow the next steps:

source  <path-to-installed-PetaLinux>/settings.sh
petalinux-create -t project --template <PLATFORM> --name <PROJECT_NAME>, where <PLATFORM> is:
	* zynqMP (for UltraScale + MPSoC) 
	* zynq (for Zynq)
	* microblaze (for MicroBlaze)
cd <path-to-project>
petalinux-config --get-hw-description=<path to hdf file>
To build the desired hdl file check Building HDL!
When running petalinux-config, a configuration menu will come up. Go to Yocto Settings→User layers and add the <path-to-meta-adi>/meta-adi-xilinx and <path-to-meta-adi>/meta-adi-core. Check the images below…

Since meta-adi-xilinx depends on meta-adi-core, it has to be included after meta-adi-core. The order is important! If meta-adi-xilinx is included before meta-adi-core, petalinx-config will fail!

Depending on the platforms, a different device tree must be used. After finishing the previous steps, you must edit the device-tree.bbappend and set the KERNEL_DTB variable with the desired device tree. At the time of this writing these are the supported device trees:

The device-tree.bbappend file is located under <path-to-meta-adi>/meta-adi-xilinx/recipes-bsp/device-tree/

Finally, build the project with:

petalinux-build

Booting for Zynq and ZynqMP

To boot a Petalinux image in Zynq and ZynqMP, you need to build the BOOT.bin file. For that, run:

petalinux-package --boot --fsbl --fpga --u-boot

Then, place the following files in the boot partition of your SD card:

  • BOOT.bin
  • image.ub

Plug the SD card on the board and boot.

Booting for Microblaze

Make sure that you have Xilinx Vivado SDK installed on your system

For Microblaze, the Xilinx System Debugger is used to run the linux kernel directly from memory. Run the following commands:
