EVAL-ADIS2 EVALUATION SYSTEM

The EVAL-ADIS2 is a PC-based evaluation system that supports communication with most ADIS16xxx products, using the “breakout board” evaluation tools for each of these product. The following diagram illustrates the important connections between the device-under-test (DUT, ADIS16xxx) and a PC, when using the EVAL-ADIS2.

The following picture identifies the key features associated with this evaluation system. Click on the image to access a larger view.

For a complete listing of products that the EVAL-ADIS2 supports, please see the Tool Cross Reference listing in this Wiki Guide.

EVAL-ADIS2 Kit Contents

- EVAL-ADIS2 Evaluation Board

- Mini USB Cable, 6ft

- 16-pin IDC cable, 1.5“

- 16-pin IDC cable, 12”

- M2x0.4mm machine screw/hardware kit

NOTE: The EVAL-ADIS2 kit does not include the device-under-test (DUT) or breakout board. Those accessories need to be purchased separately. The Tool Cross Reference contains a list of model numbers (product and breakout board) that the EVAL-ADIS2 support.

PC System Requirements

- Microsoft Windows

- ADI SDP USB Driver

-.NET Framework 3.5

Quick Start Guide

The following sequence of steps provides the quickest and most reliable process for setting up your EVAL-ADIS2 for operation on a PC.

Step #1: DUT Supply Setting

JP1 provides three DUT power supply options: +3.3V, +5V and Ext (external supply).

Use the following table to identify the correct JP1 setting for the DUT:

JP1 = +3.3V JP1 = +5V

ADIS16210 ADIS16465 ADIS16488 ADIS16507 ADIS16137 ADIS16360 ADIS16407
ADIS16223 ADIS16467 ADIS16488A ADIS16260 ADIS16362
ADIS16227 ADIS16470 ADIS16490 ADIS16265 ADIS16364
ADIS16228 ADIS16475 ADIS16495 ADIS16266 ADIS16365

External Supply Option

In order to use external supply option, remove the header from JP1 and solder the middle post to the hole that has the EXT label on the EVAL-ADIS2. The next revision of this board will move this hole so that this option will be available using the same header that connects to the +3.3V and +5V settings on JP1.

Then, connect the external supply to J3, using the following diagram to illustrate the correct connections:

Step #2: DUT/Breakout Board Connection

All ADIS16xxx (DUT) devices connect to the EVAL-ADIS2 through a breakout board. There are two different types of breakout boards: Model-specific and Generic.

Model-specific breakout boards typically support products that require solder-reflow attachment, while Generic breakout boards typically support products that use some form of “press-in” connectors. So, the Model-specific breakout boards typically come have their DUT already installed onto the board, while the Generic breakout boards do not include the DUT (they have to be purchased separately).

The following table provides a summary of each Model-specific breakout board which the EVAL-ADIS2 supports:

ADIS1620x/PCBZ ADIS1626x/PCBZ ADIS1647x-x/PCBZ ADIS1650x-x/PCBZ
ADIS16201/PCBZ ADIS16260/PCBZ ADIS16470/PCBZ ADIS16500/PCBZ
ADIS16203/PCBZ ADIS16265/PCBZ ADIS16475-1/PCBZ ADIS16505-1/PCBZ
ADIS16209/PCBZ ADIS16266/PCBZ ADIS16475-2/PCBZ ADIS16505-2/PCBZ
ADIS16477-1/PCBZ ADIS16505-3/PCBZ

ADIS16477-3/PCBZ ADIS16507-2/PCBZ
ADIS16507-3/PCBZ

The following table provides a summary of the most appropriate breakout board for each ADIS16xxx device that uses a Generic breakout board to connect with the EVAL-ADIS2. TIP: Hover the mouse pointer over the breakout board (heading row in the table), right click on it, then click on Open in new tab to open useful setup instructions for that breakout board, in a new tab.

Step #3: Breakout Board/EVAL-ADIS2 Connection

The J1 connector on the EVAL-ADIS2 supports remote connection to compatible breakout boards, using one of two IDC cables, which come with the EVAL-ADIS2 kit.

NOTE: The supporting connector (J1) on the ADIS1620x/PCBZ and ADIS1626x/PCBZ breakout boards only has 12-pins. In these cases, make sure that pin 1 (J1 on the ADIS1620x/PCBZ or ADIS1626x/PCBZ) connects to pin 1 on J1 of the EVAL-ADIS2.

Click here for more information on these special cases.

Step #4: USB Driver

Download the USB driver for the EVAL-ADIS2 and store it in a convenient, temporary folder on the Test PC. Then, double click on this file. Answer all of the questions presented by the installation routine.

Click here to download the latest USB driver for the EVAL-ADIS2

After downloading the EVAL-ADIS USB Driver file, extract the SDPDrivers.exe file from the zip file, into a convenient location and then double click on it to start the process. When the setup wizard opens, click on Next to start the installation process

Click on Next to accept the default driver location.

The process will involve at least two progress bars that look like the following:

If you encounter this type of message during the process, click on Install to continue with the installation.

Once the installation has completed, click on Finish to complete the process.

Step #5: Application Software

Download the DUT's evaluation software package, but clicking on its heading in the following table. Store the file in a convenient location on the test PC and extract its executable file.
