Isolated Low Power pH Monitor with Temperature Compensation PMOD

The CN0326 is a completely isolated low power pH sensor signal conditioner and digitizer with automatic temperature compensation for high accuracy. The circuit gives 0.5% accurate readings for pH values from 0 to 14 with greater than 14-bits of noise-free code resolution and is suitable for a variety of industrial applications such as chemical, food processing, water, and wastewater analysis. This circuit supports a wide variety of pH sensors that have very high internal resistance that can range from 1 MΩ to several GΩ, and digital signal and power isolation provides immunity to noise and transient voltages often encountered in harsh industrial environments. For general board details and to buy a board please visit the EVAL-CN0326-PMDZ product page.

Hardware Setup

The PMOD board is small in size with dimensions approximately 1.4 inch in width by 2.4 inches in length. The following are the instructions in using the board.

Power Supply Requirements

When using the CN0326 PMOD board, the 3.3V power for the PMOD comes directly from the host board it is connected to. The power from the host is generally capable of providing up to 100 mA at 3.3V, but for complete PMOD power specifications please click here.

Sensor Probe Requirements

When using the CN0326 PMOD board, a general purpose pH probe with BNC connecter can be used for pH measurement. An example of a pH probe that can be used is a product from Atlas or from Hach. For temperature compensation, an RTD sensor with RCA connector can be used. An example is from Atlas or from Omega. These sensors are required in order to run and capture analog signal from a sample solution.

Digital Interface (PMOD)

The PMOD interface is a series of standardized digital interfaces for various digital communication protocols such as SPI, I2C, and UART. These interface types were standardized by Digilent, which is now a division of National Instruments. Complete details on the PMOD specification can be found here.

The specific interface used for the EVAL-CN0326-PMDZ boards is the extended SPI. In general ADI has adopted the extended SPI connector for all PMOD devices which have an SPI interface. It provides flexibility to add interrupts, general purpose I/O, resets, and other important digitally controlled functions.

P1 Pin Number Pin Function Mnemonic
Pin 1 Chip Select CS_N
Pin 2 Master Out Slave In DIN
Pin 3 Master In Slave Out DOUT
Pin 4 Serial Clock SCLK
Pin 5 Digital Ground DGND
Pin 6 Digital Power VDD
Pin 7 Not Connected NC
Pin 8 Not Connected NC

Pin 12 Digital Power VDD

The EVAL-CN0326-PMDZ has RCout pins. This pin is connected to the RCIN pin of a slave isoPower device to allow the ADuM5401 to control the regulation of the slave device. This allows ADUM5401 to provide its PWM signal to another device acting as a master to regulate its self and slave devices. This pins is accesible through the SPI PMOD header. For complete details, please consult the datasheet at ADUM5401.
