CN0229 Evaluation Board Guide

Overview

CN0229 is a multichannel, flexible, analog output solution with only two analog components and meets most requirements for multichannel I/O cards, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and distributed control systems (DCSs) applications. The circuit also contains key features for industrial applications, such as on-chip output fault detection, packet error checking (PEC) by the CRC, flexible power-up options, and ESD protection making it an ideal choice for robust industrial control systems.

The AD5750-2 is a single-channel, low cost, precision voltage/current output driver developed to meet the requirements of industrial process control applications. The voltage output range can be programmed for the standard output ranges for PLC and DCS applications: 0 V to 5 V, 0 V to 10 V, −5 V to +5 V, and −10 V to +10 V with a 20% overrange setting provided for the standard ranges. The current output, which is provided on a separate pin, can be programmed for the ranges of 4 mA to 20 mA, 0 mA to 20 mA, −20 mA to +20 mA, 0 mA to 24 mA, and −24 mA to +24 mA. The unipolar ranges have a 2% overrange setting.

The AD5686R is a quad 16-bit nanoDAC+ with rail-to-rail voltage-buffered outputs integrated with an on-chip 2 ppm/°C typical (5 ppm/°C maximum), 2.5 V reference. The on-chip reference can drive the reference input of all four AD5750-2s, has a low output impedance of 0.05 Ω, and can source and sink up to 5 mA.

The ADuM1301 is a triple-channel digital isolator. The ADuM5400 is a quad-channel digital isolator with an integrated, isolated, dc-to-dc converter. They are both based on iCoupler® technology and are used to provide isolation between the signal chain and the system microcontroller, with an isolation rating of 2.5 kV rms. The ADuM5400 provides an isolated 5 V power supply for the 5 V circuits in the secondary side.

The EVAL-CN0229-SDPZ board connects to ADI’s System Demonstration Platform (SDP) and is powered by a triple output DC power supply of +15 V, -15 V and 6 V.

Required Equipment

  • EVAL-SDP-CB1Z Controller Board (SDP-B Board)
  • Triple Output DC Power Supply (6 V, +15 V and -15 V)
    • Agilent E3631A 0 V to 6 V/5 A; ±25 V/1 A Triple Output DC Power Supply
  • Digital Multimeter for Verification (Optional)
    • Agilent 34401A 6.5 Digital Multimeter
  • PC with the following Minimum Requirements
    • Windows 7 or higher
    • USB interface

General Setup

Block assignments

  • The EVAL-CN0229-SDPZ (CN-0229 Board) connects to the EVAL-SDP-CB1Z (SDP-B Board) via the 120-Pin connector
  • The EVAL-SDP-CB1Z (SDP-B Board) connects to the PC via the USB cable.
  • Terminal block CN1 is the +/- 15 V power supply input
  • Terminal block CN2 is the +6 V power supply input
  • Four OUT_[x] voltage/current output channels
    • Optionally, the AD5750-2 output voltage feedback can be configured by connecting VSENSE+ and VSENSE- across a selected branch in the load circuit. VSENSE- should be within +/- 3.0 V of the GND

Do not connect the USB cable to the Mini-USB connector on the SDP board before turning on the dc power supply for the EVAL-CN0229-SDPZ.

Jumper settings

See image below for jumper settings. The bolded values are the default settings for the EVAL-CN0229-SPDZ.

Installing the Evaluation Software

  1. Extract the file CN0229_Evaluation_Software.zip and open the file setup.exe.

NOTE: It is recommended that you install the CN0229 Evaluation Software to the default directory path C:\Program Files (x86)\Analog Devices\CN0229\ and all National Instruments products to C:\Program Files\National Instruments\

  2. Click Next to view the installation review page

  3. Click Next to start the installation

  4. Upon completion of the installation of the CN-0229 Evaluation Software, the installer for the ADI SDP Drivers will execute.

NOTE: It is recommended that you close all other applications before clicking “Next”. This will make it possible to update relevant system files without having to reboot your computer.

  5. Press “Next” to set the installation location for the SDP Drivers.

It is recommended that you install the drivers to the default directory path
    C:\Program Files\Analog Devices\SDP\Drivers

  6. Press “Next” to install the SDP Drivers and complete the installation of all software. Click “Finish” when done.
