ADIS16265 EVALUATION ON THE EVAL-ADIS

OVERVIEW

The ADIS16265 is a fully calibrated, digital gyroscope provides +/-320 degrees/second of measurement range. The standard supply voltage (+5V) and serial peripheral interface (SPI) enable simple integration into most industrial system designs. A simple internal register structure handles all output data and configuration features. This includes access to the following output data: calibrated rotation rate, power supply, internal temperature, auxiliary analog and digital input signals, diagnostic error flags, and programmable alarm conditions.

The electrical connection typically only requires 5 I/O lines for synchronous data collection, as shown in the following figure:

ADIS16265/PCB BREAKOUT BOARD

For those who are on a tight timeline, connecting the ADIS16265 to an embedded controller will provide the most flexibility in developing application firmware and will more closely reflect the final system design. The ADIS16265/PCBZ is the breakout board for the ADIS16265 and may provide assistance in the process of hooking it up to an existing embedded processor system.

EQUIPMENT LIST

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Windows XP, Vista, 7

.NET Framework 3.5

NOTE: Newer versions of the .NET framework do not currently support the IMU Evaluation software package.

PHYSICAL SETUP

The ADIS16265 provides the EVAL-ADIS16265 function on a 1.2 inch × 1.3 inch printed circuit board (PCB), which simplifies the connection to an existing processor system. The four mounting holes accommodate either M2 (2mm) or Type 2-56 machine screws. These boards are made of IS410 material and are 0.063 inches thick. The second level assembly uses a SAC305-compatible solder composition (Pb-free), which has a pre-solder re-flow thickness of approximately 0.005 inches. The pad pattern on the ADIS16265/PCBZ matches that shown in below. J1 and J2 are dual-row, 2 mm (pitch) connectors that work with a number of ribbon cable systems, including 3M Part Number 152212-0100-GB (ribbon-crimp connector) and 3M Part Number 3625/12 (ribbon cable).

NOTE: Do not plug the EVAL-ADIS into the USB cable at this stage of the setup. Wait until the software installation is complete.

Step #1

The connection to the ADIS16265/PCBZ is simple using J1 and a 16 pin cable included with the EVAL-ADIS.

WARNING: Make sure that the connector cable going from J1 on the ADIS16265/PCBZ is properly aligned to the J1 connector on the EVAL-ADIS. The 16 pin cable is included with the EVAL-ADIS and proper mating has the last 4 cable connections open. The Black wire from from J2-12 of the ADIS16265/PCBZ to the DIO1 test point on the EVAL-ADIS is only required for synchronous data.

Step #2

Mounting to the system frame is accomplished using 4 M2x.4x4mm machine screws included with the ADIS16265/PCBZ. The mounting location holes are marked as an example in the picture below. Use the 4 A-location holes to secure the ADIS16265/PCBZ to the EVAL-ADIS.

Step #3

The following picture (left side) shows JP1 in the +3.3V position (factory-default). That is not the correct JP1 jumper setting on the EVAL-ADIS) required for the ADIS16265CCCZand should be moved to the *+5V* position.

NOTE: If JP1 is left on +3.3v position the software will look like the following picture. Move JP1 to the+5V setting to correct the problem.

IMU EVALUATION SOFTWARE FOR THE ADIS16265

After the USB driver installation is complete, connect the EVAL-ADIS USB connector to the PC, using the USB Mini cable, from the EVAL-ADIS kit. LED2 will illuminate as soon as this connection is made. This indicates that the EVAL-ADIS has power and is going through its start-up/initialization process. After the EVAL-ADIS completes its this process, LED1 will illuminate, indicating that it is time to launch the IMU Evaluation application. During the initialization process, several messages may appear on the screen. They are related to updating the EVAL-ADIS firmware and establishing communication between the PC and the EVAL-ADIS. Once LED1 lights up, double click on the IMU_Evaluation.exe file to launch the application.
